Seido Karate Devonport

Seido Karate has been operating in Devonport for over 17 years. Our goal is to develop students to achieve more for themselves than they perhaps thought possible. By building confidence, self-discipline, physical fitness and camaraderie in a friendly, supportive and non-competitive envoironment students find that karate benefits their everyday lives. Seido karate is not about who can kick highest, is strongest, or can win a fight, but instead encourages individuals to strive to do their best and to challenge themselves by pushing beyond their perceived limitations.

Our training system is structured and supervised to ensure that students train in a safe and constructive envoironment. We have separate classes for children and adults.

Our karate students range in age from 5 year old children upwards. Beginners can be any age, shape, size or level of fitness. Training is not dependent on any particular capabilities. We have men, women and children of all ages training at our classes.

Devonport Seido Karate is a non profit incorporated society. Classes are taken by qualified black belt instructors who have a comprehensive range of skills and teaching methods. Instructors are not paid, but teach to offer back to others what Seido karate gives them. Our chief instructors, Jun Shihan Danny Watson (6th dan), and Kyoshi Bruce Craig (5th dan) have over 50 years experience between them.

Seido karate was founded in 1976 by Tadashi Nakamura (now a 9th dan black belt). Seido's headquarters are in New York, but clubs are operating all over the world. It is especially strong in New Zealand with large clubs in Auckland, Nelson and Christchurch, as well as many smaller clubs spread across the country.
